15 Amazon Must Haves for Candle Making

There are some Amazon must haves for candle making that you must… how shall I say? Must have!!! If you’re either considering diving into the world of candle making or already have some experience under your belt, I’ve got some news for you. Candle making is easy. Just kidding. It’s very tough and it’s a craft that involves multiple layers of intricacy. That’s why I’ve curated a list of my 15 favorite Amazon items that have significantly simplified my own candle making journey, particularly when it comes to working with concrete candle jars.

Scale

I recently upgraded my scale from a small, worn-out gray scale that has gone through a lot, to a new dual platform scale. Let me tell you, this new scale is absolutely incredible! It accurately measures the weight of my heavy concrete mixtures and waxes, and it has a generously sized LED screen that allows me to read the measurements even in different lighting conditions. Moreover, when I need to weigh my fragrance oils, I can easily switch over to the precision scale. The best part is that the smaller scale measures in increments as precise as 0.01, so I no longer waste any product. This is truly fantastic because precision is something I value greatly. I frequently discuss weighing mixtures on my channel, and with a regular scale, it was always uncertain when dealing with micrograms. But now, with this scale, I receive exact weight measurements for my fragrance oils. I absolutely love it!

Thermometer

This compact temperature gauge is perfect for providing me with the reading of my melted wax. On one occasion, I unintentionally left my wax melter on for an extended duration, setting it to the highest level marked as the RED zone on the dial, which signifies a significant danger. However, when I inserted this thermometer into the wax melter, it registered the temperature of my wax as 326 degrees. Although I ended up burning the wax, I appreciate this small device for alerting me to my mistake. Despite feeling disappointed in myself, I felt relieved that the red thermometer warned me of the issue. I am truly grateful for this red thermometer. It’s fantastic!

Globmarble Pigment

The Globmarble Pigment brand has won over my heart. What sparked this love affair? It all began when I first experimented with their Supra black pigment. From that moment on, I couldn’t imagine using any other color. The results were stunning, as the vessels turned out truly amazing. However, my adoration for Globmarble grew even stronger when I received an unexpected call from them. It turns out that I had placed an order for Supra Black pigment both on their official website and through Amazon (which, in essence, goes through their website as well). It might seem puzzling, but bear in mind, it’s just a “blonde thing” that I can’t explain. Late that evening, I received a call from Bridget, a sales representative from Globmarble. She astutely noticed that I had duplicated my order and wanted to inform me of the potential error. I expressed my gratitude to Bridget for her attentiveness but our conversation took an interesting turn as I shared the UpVibe Youtube channel with her, and she thoroughly enjoyed it. Bridget even offered her assistance, saying she’d be glad to help in any way possible. After exchanging a few emails, she kindly gifted me three different colors for a video I posted on concrete alternatives (blog post here). Let me tell you, each and every color was absolutely fantastic! I genuinely adore Globmarble’s products. But you know what meant the most to me? The fact that Bridget looked out for me as a customer. That, my friends, was truly awesome. I couldn’t be more thrilled about it.

Wax Melter

Apart from its affordable price, one of the things I really like about my wax melter is the temperature gauge dial located on the power cord. Just a heads-up, it’s not flawless. When I set it to 195 degrees, it might fluctuate slightly rather than maintaining a steady temperature. So, you need to keep an eye on it. Nonetheless, it brings me pretty close to the desired wax heating level. Lastly, its compact size makes it perfect for fitting into any corner of my studio. It’s so awesome that I ended up buying two. Love it!

Respirator

If you’re familiar with the UP Vibe Youtube channel, you’ll know that I always have my respirator on. In fact, I make it a point to emphasize its importance every time I record a video. Why? Well, because I genuinely care about your safety and, of course, my own safety. As candle makers, we are exposed to concrete, wax, fragrance oil, soot, and who knows what else. If we want to pursue this craft in the long run, it’s crucial that we protect ourselves. I mean… I wear my respirator constantly. In fact I wear it so much; it actually broke from the numerous times I’ve put it on and taken it off. So, get yourself a respirator!

Amazon Silicone Mold

If you’re a candle maker who utilizes concrete vessels for your candles, acquiring an Amazon silicone mold is one of the Amazon must haves for candle making… that is… if you don’t already have one. I absolutely love this mold. It is lightweight, easy to clean, highly durable, and produces fantastic concrete vessels. I don’t mean to diminish the exceptional silicone mold creators within the candle making community, but this particular mold is truly remarkable. The best part is that it’s affordable, and whenever I require a replacement, I simply visit Amazon, click “buy it now,” and then await its arrival the following day. It’s the best!

Vibrating Machine

Now, to be fair, a vibration device isn’t absolutely necessary when you’re just starting out, but not having one is akin to buying a bicycle without inflating the tires. Sure, you can ride it, but it won’t be easy or enjoyable. Personally, I place my silicone mold on top of my vibrating machine, switch it on, and let the vibrations draw the contents into the mold while eliminating any trapped air bubbles in my mixture. I no longer have to tap the silicone mold, lift and drop it down, or worry, because my vibrating machine does all the work for me. It’s incredible!

Silicone Trivets

Once upon a wax-tastic time, I embarked on a candle-making adventure. I carefully poured my molten wax into a metallic pitcher, and as I leaned in to find a spot for it on the table, I exclaimed, “Oh snap! Where can I safely park this scorching 220-degree pitcher?” Panic crept in, but then I had a brilliant idea! I gingerly placed the sizzling vessel on my trusty concrete floor. Phew, crisis averted… or so I thought. When the time came to check the wax temperature, I groaned realizing I still had to wait. Back pain started to nag me, and it was just the first candle! How on earth could I continue this craft if I had to bend down every time? Then, like magic, it hit me: silicone trivets to the rescue! These nifty contraptions shield my table from the hot wax-filled pitcher, or anywhere else it needs to rest. With a pack of four by my side, I pour with ease and joy. My back rejoices, and we all live happily wax-er after. Love it!

Apple Barrel Paint

I have created numerous designs for concrete candle jars on this channel, and recently, I’ve started utilizing acrylic paint for these designs. After trying several different brands, I found Apple Barrel Paint to be exceptional. It has a smooth and thick consistency, and it blends perfectly into my concrete. What I adore about it is that I can purchase larger containers, ensuring I won’t run out of paint. If you’re an acrylic paint enthusiast, I highly recommend giving Apple Barrel Paint a try. You might just fall in love with it as I did.

Digital Liquid Thermometer

A digital liquid thermometer is an essential tool for every candle maker. It aids in determining the temperature of the candle jar’s surface. It’s crucial to ensure that the candle jar never exceeds 140 degrees, especially during the testing phase. This remarkable device is lightweight, user-friendly, and consistently reliable. No fever! I absolutely love it.

Heat Gun

A heat gun for candles is comparable to a comb for hair. Just like waking up with bed head, even after a shower, your hair is at the mercy of a towel. But with a comb, it becomes perfect or at least close to it. Similarly, a heat gun helps fix any imperfections that occur during the curing process. While some waxes may not require a heat gun as much, like my coconut apricot creme wax that is pretty smooth, there are still occasional bubbles or imperfect wax adhesion to the vessel. By using this tool, I achieve perfection instantly. You should definitely get a heat gun! It’s amazing!

Wick Trimmer

I love my wick trimmer because it’s incredibly convenient when trimming wicks to a quarter inch. Especially when the wax level in my vessel is halfway or lower, I simply place the wick trimmer and snip it off. There’s no need to get my hands all waxed up or worry about missing the mark while trimming. With clear visibility, there’s no confusion as I can see everything I’m doing. This tool gets the job done every single time. I love it!

Taklon Brushes

When I first started painting and sealing my concrete vessels, I was disappointed with the visible brush strokes. I experimented with sponge brushes, regular bristle brushes, and even tried using a cloth, but nothing worked. Then, while researching on YouTube, I came across a painter who highly recommended taklon brushes. Intrigued, I gave them a try, and wow, they are fantastic! The brushes provide smooth strokes, and the bristles remain intact for a long time. The best part is, when using Earth Safe Finishes to seal the vessels, there are no lap lines or brush strokes at all. I absolutely love it!

Rubber Feet

When I started creating concrete candles, I was concerned about how the bottom of the vessel would turn out. It wasn’t as smooth as the rest of the vessel and sometimes seemed uneven. While I have solved many of these issues with a vibrating machine and my pursuit of perfection, these rubber feet truly seal the deal. Not only do they cover up some imperfections, but they also protect my quartz countertop or any other surface where I place my candle. Despite their seemingly unimportant nature, these little rubber feet serve a much bigger purpose. Trust me, you should get some rubber feet for your concrete candle jars. It’s fantastic!

Light Kit

When I started my UpVibe YouTube channel, I initially used my bulky Westcott spider lights for photography. Although they were convenient since I had them for years, they took up too much space. Setting up my videos in the kitchen meant constantly moving the lights, which became a hassle. However, my research led me to discover the GVM light kit. This three-lightweight setup offers adjustable color temperature from 2300 kelvin to 6800 kelvin. The lights can be dimmed from 10% to 100% brightness, and they are incredibly bright. The kit includes stands and barn doors to direct the light to specific areas of your subject. Even if you’re not shooting YouTube videos like me, this three-part setup is perfect for photographing your candles. Place two lights on the sides and one in the back for a subtle backlight, adding dimension and depth to your images. If you have the extra funds, invest in these lights. The possibilities are endless with this fantastic kit!
